This is the novel, Snow Falling In Spring, a memoir by Moying Li.

In the novel, Snow Falling In Spring, a memoir by Moying Li, we learn Moying Li's story of growing up during both the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. At the beginning of the novel, Moying Li is just about 4 years old and it takes place in Beijing, China. During this time, the Great Leap Forward was being discussed amongst its people. They believed that the Great Leap Forward had changed China forever, but little did they know, the Cultural Revolution was on its way. The Cultural Revolution soon made its appearance in China and had truly made an impact on the everyday lives of the Chinese.

When Moying Li was just a small child, her mother went away to teach and she was left with her grandmother, otherwise known as Lao Lao. When Moying Li returns home from visiting a family member, she finds that the Great Leap Forward has gone into action. During this time, Chairman Mao (Mao Zedong)was the leader of China and had done numerous things that he thought would help their country. His decisions caused a widespread famine, it had impacted the government, economy, and its people. Since things like these had come about, a lot of violence had taken place causing more injuries and deaths. The number of deaths, injuries, and illnesses had began to rise, not only from the violence, but from the famine and the stress of the whole downfall of the economy.

Although China had changed drastically, Moying Li had grown up in the environment, but learned to stay as optimistic as she could. Through her positive attitude and thoughts, Moying Li proves to us that we should always strive to achieve our goals. She shows us this when she takes her exams to get into the Beijing Foreign Language Institute. Moying Li never gave up hope throughout the downfall of the economy. No one thought she would even have a chance to enroll in schooling because she didn't come from a working class background, but when they allowed her and many others to apply after 10 years of rejection, she makes it in and does very well. She does encounter some complications throughout the rest of her life, but she never fails to return to the place that had been her home for many years, Beijing, China. Moying Li returns to say, "China was the land that had given me birth, love and friendship." (163). She realizes all that she has learned from China and takes time to appreciate the beauty, knowledge, and wisdom that she has experienced during her time there.

When Moying Li returns to China for the second time, after living in America for 26 years, she comes to find the beauty her beloved courtyard being covered in the mysterious snow fall during one spring morning. She reminds herself that this is her home and no matter where she goes in life, the siheyuan that once existed along with her courtyard, had held many memories that she will never forget.
